About Theresa
Hi! I am Theresa Whalen, a wife, a mother and a grandmother, who just entered the 60s. As I was nearing my 50s, my family history of chronic diseases and my new marriage motivated me to be “Fabulous at 50!” It was then that I really began to become passionate about fitness and nutrition, not only to look good but to feel good as well. My family has a history of high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, thyroid disease, and osteoporosis. In an effort to avoid being bogged down with medication and disease I looked to lifestyle changes to be able to continue to maintain my active lifestyle and keep up with my spirited grandkids for many years to come. I love to travel and being outdoors. On the weekends, my husband and I enjoy hiking at local parks or biking the NCR and C&O Canal Trails. It is important to me to be able to continue and expand on these hobbies as I near retirement. Keeping my body well nourished and healthy is an important part of maintaining the quality of life I desire.
Realize nothing is going to change until you make a change.
My first adult experience with a gym was not until my middle-aged years. My family and career kept me busy and away from focusing on my fitness for decades, and getting back into the fitness world was intimidating. I didn’t know how to use the equipment or what exercises were right for me. I decided to start working with a personal trainer and had modest success but felt like the trainer could not relate to the challenges of mid-aged women with changing metabolisms. That’s when I decided to begin working out on my own. The gym I belonged to had just closed and I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes and osteopenia. After talking with my doctor, I knew now more than ever, I needed to focus on my health and make changes in my lifestyle. With guidance from my doctor and copious reading on nutrition and metabolism of menopausal women, I began developing my own exercise routines and nutrition plans and finally started getting the results I desired. I am in the best shape of my adult life and feel energized to take on this next chapter!
Age is like wine, it gets better with time.
